Wing Chun Legs: How to Block Kicks (LEGIT)
You've seen the power of round kicks. In this video, I show you how to defend against them, the Wing Chun Way!
I've spent 28 years learning Wing Chun.... Hands on Wing Chun, sparring and testing the art under hard pressure. I've learned what works and what doesn't. The knowledge you hear on this video is legit, battle tested, not just theory. Follow what I say in this video and you may make a hard, round kicker think twice before throwing a second one.
With a focus on practical application and detailed instruction, I cover three crucial aspects of defending against round kicks: conditioning the shins, checking with structure, and forward energy.

The 3 forms are in Wing Chun so that your techniques become second nature. But this will take you time but with lots of practice with a mirror to correct your form so that you can see your form as your Sifu has shown you. This can take you years to Master but if you use your free time to practice you might progress faster and your Sifu will teach you how to use that form in a practical application of each technique from either Siu Nim Tao, Chum Kiu and of course Biu Jee the 3rd form. There is no 4th form. but there are weapons in Wing Chun like the Dragon Pole and Baat Jaam Do The Butterfly Swords not to be confused with the balisong butterfly knive

My mate always drummed it into me that I will never know 100% structure or how to punch straight properly, he had a sifu that, would be all about structure, and his sifu practices forms alot. And he lived in China. He is just as accomplished as you. And a veteran like you, for years he has been wingchun. When he said that it made me question my wingchun, but as you said if you do the basics repetively thats the true homework.

This is effective the shin conditioning cos in the real fighting world people have there kicks honed hard core, and if your shins are conditioned, that will be an advantage, he might me be the one limping away not you. If your legs are conditioned there harder to break, and if theres aren't conditioned there proned to leg breaks...

Truth! I believe that is why we are seeing so many "Flow" systems coming out now because Wing Chun became rigid, and rule based. I love the part you said about constantly getting better, but I have also come to realize that you are constantly getting older, and your Wing Chun must adjust as you age especially as you pressure test!

Mr. Willis, I just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. I’ve had to learn wing chun from RUclips videos because I’m unemployed at the moment, and I’ve only found two people who are worth learning from. There’s you and another Sifu from the channel “Enter Tai Chi”. He’s really good too, but YOU actually teach the basics and fundamentals… the important stuff for beginners. So I’d have to say you’re easily my favorite. I really just want to say how much I appreciate you and really enjoy your videos. Thank you for being such a wonderful teacher and for teaching all the important things that a beginner needs to learn. Also, do you have any advice on the steps I should take to learn wing chun by myself as a beginner? I built my own wooden dummy so I’ve been practicing with that, but other than that I really don’t know what else I should really be learning. I’m dedicated and I want to get good. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated. And please keep making videos! Thanks again

Thank you for the kind words. In order to get good at Wing Chun you need to practice the basics every day and don’t stop. The next thing is you will need to find a teacher to teach you hands-on. Only half of wing chun can be learned without hands-on instruction.

The whole thing about Yip having no succesor... Well, back then Leung Sheung was his most senior student, so he WAS the succesor. Just because he died early is where the trouble started. Same with Ip Bo Ching. He's the guy always seen in a suit sitting next to Yip in those old pictures. These where the guys. Ng Chung So shares a similar story.

I am grateful for the plans for the dummy as I am an accomplished 40 year master of Carpentry and expect to have the dummy ongoing as a side project as I accumulate my skill as a martial artist. I have the book "Wing Chun Kung Fu Written by Grandmaster IP Chun with Michael Tse. But hands-on experience is the best test of true application. I don't get it. Isn't the rear hand, in this case Wu Sao, supposed to be an inside one? (In other words, isn't it supposed to deflect from the other side/away from you?) Because i see you setting it on the outside of the wooden arm. Is it just a training method or what?

There a few things that i do not understand 😢 You said that Tan Sao is an *underneath, inside hand* while Fuk Sao is a *over, outside hand* what does this really mean? Is it supposed to refer to the way in which they deflect energy in relation to the triangle you mentioned? If so, i still do not get what the over and underneath thing is all about You also said that the Tan Sao is an action, not a technique; but then it seems like you contradict yourself by saying "Tan Sao is a palm up hand" basically saying it *is* a technique. And yes, i did notice that you said "not a static technique" rather than just "not a technique" but you have said so many times before that Tan Sao is not a technique but a concept, so you are still contradicting the times you have said that by saying "The tan sao must have a palm of hand like this" I still do not understand when is it that you are actually supposed to use Tan Sao. Is it against straight punches? Grabs? Arm traps? A combination of those? I just don't get it... like, if it's supposed to deflect straight punches to the face, it just looks like it wouldn't work (i do realize that most of wing chun concepts and techniques come from weapon fighting so that may be why it's protecting the body instead of the head) so how do you protect your face while usin Tan Sao? Wouldn't both you and your opponent just trade punches (assuming you punch at the same time you use your Tan) Also, something that is a bit unrelated but related at the same time. From what i can see, a Wing Chun practitioner aims to have an inside (Tan) and outside (Fuk) sao hand at all times and if you have two insides, you do a Kwan Sao; but what do you do if the hand that you have back (like a Tan Sao) ends up in the outside or if both of your hands are in the outside? Is this just something to be avoided?? Because of course, i can't ask a fellow Judoka of mine "Hey, what are you supposed to do when they got you on a perfect rear naked choke??" Because the answer is "Don't let them catch you in it on the first place" (kinda, you still get what i mean) but i'm not sure if it really is a disadvantageous position or if i'm missing something. Becauase Kwan Sao seems to work to get out of the double inside position, which could mean that having your opponent in the double outside could be a bad thing So if somebody pushes you Man Sao (that from what i understand, is basically a version of Fuk Sao) into the inside of your triangle (example: they push your left man sao to the right), what you are supposed to do is just turn it into a Tan Sao, right? I think i get that (if i'm right) but what about stuff like the usual cross hand start that some Wing Chun drills have? That's basically a Fuk Sao that deflects to the opposite way... And which side are you supposed to shift to if you attempt to do a low fuk sao with one hand and a high bong sao with the other like in the Chi Sao drill?? I'm guessing the Bong Sao Side, but won't that just allow them to punch you with their other hand??? And why is it that you don't shift while doing chi sao? Is it because it's a drill and it's not supposed to teach you about footwork or for any other reason?
